About

Carla has had a camera in her hand for as long as she can remember. The earliest photos were taken on family vacations and school trips, and the results are useful only for memories and scrapbooking. As she grew, the skills involved increased as well. Her father has a love for photography as well, and through the multiple books he owned, Carla started studying about what makes a good photograph.

In middle school she jumped at the chance to become the yearbook photographer for the school yearbook. While this only involved taking candids of students, it meant that she was able to learn more about photography and see what others thought were good about certain photographs. This job continued through high school, and even won her some awards in 4-H. Her camera during school was a Minolta SLR camera that was 100% manual. It was an instance of “sink or swim.”

Fast forward many years (but not too many…she’s not THAT old!), she bought her first digital camera and rediscovered a love of experimenting and capturing the personalities of her own children. Within a year she was begging her friends to let her take some shots of their kids as her children had started rebelling. They loved what she took, and then shockingly to her, their friends started asking for sessions.

Thus, Carla Blankenship Photography was born. A name that is not creative. A name that she had to decide on in less than a week before her first client came and she had to get a business license. She is continuing to learn, experiment, and still loves taking photographs. Photographs of feet, smiling faces, crying faces, hands, and yes, even non-human subjects!
